The Crypt

Beginning in 2005, park guests were welcomed into the Congo area of the park by the fire, smoke, water, and taunting music of Tomb Raider: Firefall. Directly across the midway from Volcano: The Blast Coaster stands this HUSS suspended top spin ride, originally themed to the 2001 Paramount movie, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

After Cedar Fair purchased the park in 2008, the ride was renamed “The Crypt” and slightly re-themed, losing it’s Tomb Raider references. Kings Dominion’s website proclaims that the 2 minute and 55 second attraction is “one of the most thrilling non-roller coaster rides around.” The ride is not only an amazing experience, but also exciting to watch and take photos of because of the great special effects.

Once the ride-ops give the “all clear” signals, the floor platform lowers leaving nothing but the water below. The thrilling adventure of The Crypt begins when the drumming music starts before gradually progressing to a louder crescendo as the ride really picks up. The gondola rotates backwards as it is raised up to the highest point of the attraction. Once the ride reaches this point, riders rotate forwards before flipping upside down several times while the fountains spray high, looming closer to the riders. The Crypt’s gondola then rotates forwards back up to the top before descending towards the flames of fire beneath them. Once the cycles are complete, the ride’s dramatic music begins to calm in unison with the special effects before the ride locks back into place with the floor platform raising back into position.
