Shockwave

Shockwave

In 1986 quests at King’s Dominion wouldn’t have to sit down for their new ride. Guest stood up for Shockwave a new TOGO stand-up coaster. Shockwave is 95ft tall and has a 84ft drop and one single loop. Although their was already a single looping roller coaster across the park, Kings dominion’s first launched coaster King Kobra, it was removed and had it place taken by Shockwave.

Shockwave is still operating in the Grove section of the park. Its original colors Hunter Green and Canary Yellow aren’t their anymore. They are now neon colors Blue, Orange and green. The ride starts out going up the lift hill from right out of the station, then after going down hill for a little bit theirs a quick turnaround and then the 84ft drop straight into the loop, then up a hill and into a double helix element and up a hill passing the station then a tight turnaround and a small hill then the train hits the brake run. After sitting on the brakes for a few minutes the brakes release and the train does one last turnaround into the storage track into the station. The rides capacity is high but slow. The ride time is about 2:00 minutes.

The ride isn’t in much popularity as it was in the past. But the ride got attention in May 1999 when an fatal accident happened. A young man from New York started messing around with his restraints and got himself out of them and on the rides final turn before the brakes he was thrown out of the train and hit the catwalk at speeds of 50mph. This resulted in his death. This isn’t the first death on that spot of land the ride sits on. In 1983 the parks Galaxi roller coaster had a fatal accident as well with a 13 year old who stood up and was decapitated by a support beam.

The ride has had less popularity than it was before the accident but hundreds of people ride still. According to John Pagel, Kings Dominion’s former marketing manager, Shockwave is the most reliable ride at the park. He says that Shockwave won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
