El Dorado

The 2009 season at Kings Dominion saw the addition of two new flat rides, one of which being the “El Dorado Drive In.”

El Dorado was originally opened in 1991 at Geauga Lake in Ohio. It was at that timed called “Mirage” and had an Arabian theme. In 1997 the ride was revamped and moved into the parks ‘50s themed area where it was renamed El Dorado. The ride operated at Geauga Lake until the end of the 2007 season. Early 2008 it was dismantled, and pieces of it began arriving at Kings Dominion during summer 2008. In January 2009 land clearing in between the Xtreme SkyFlyer and the old Hypersonic XLC station began. On opening day of the 2009 season, El Dorado debuted at Kings Dominion.

El Dorado is a Weber Swinging Pendulum style ride, which some people call “Magic Carpet” rides. Up to 40 riders board the ride at ground level, and are then swung back and forth to a height of 85 feet, momentarily stopping at the top. The motion induces both positive and negative g-forces on the riders, which give great “air time” sensations to all aboard. Your “road trip” on El Dorado lasts about 2 minutes.
